ISE (Istituto Sperimentale per la Elaiotecnia)

ISE is a research institution of the Italian Ministry of Agriculture specialized in studies on olive fruits and olive oil, which provides support for the olive oil and table olive industries both within and outside Italy. ISE consists of three departments specialized in researches on olive oil chemistry, technological process of oil extraction and processing methodologies of fruits to be consumed as table olives.

More precisely the main task of the Oil Chemistry Department is the development of methodologies able to define the olive oil quality, to establish its geographical origin and to assess its authenticity. In the framework of the olive oil quality, ISE played a key role in developing sensory methodologies on virgin olive oil, actually included in EU regulations.

The Elaiotecnica Department is mainly oriented to technological aspects and interested to the optimisation of the oil extraction systems in relation to the achievement of both the highest yields and the better oil quality.

The Table olive Department is directed to the identification of olive tree varieties suitable to be processed as table olives, to the study and development of innovative processing technologies and to researches on physical-chemical properties related to the sensory characteristics of processed fruits.

ITAP (Institute of Technology of Agricultural Products)

The Institute of Technology of Agricultural Products (ITAP), was founded in 1933 by the Greek Ministry for Agriculture as "Station for Agricultural Technology". Since 1952, the Institute has been relocated in Lycovrissi, near Athens (Greece). Nowadays, it belongs to the National Agricultural Research Foundation (NAGREF) which was founded in 1989 under the law 1845/1989, functioning as a private entity of the wider public sector under the supervision of the Ministry for Agriculture. As the main agricultural research foundation in the country, NAGREF contributes to (i) the production of innovative know-how and technology, (ii) the demonstration of research results and (iii) dissemination and exploitation of research results. The main research and technological activities of ITAP are: (a) Preservation of fresh fruits and vegetables, (b) Food processing of plant origin (freezing, canning, dehydration, juice making etc), (c) Technology of milk, fish and related products, (d) Food biotechnology with main emphasis on the management of agro-industrial wastes.

ITAP has greatly contributed to scientific research and technology in the sector of table olives and it is held in high esteem by the industry. In addition, ITAP has an excellent collaboration with the Greek Association of table olive producers, packers and exporters, a body that encompasses the majority of table olive industries in Greece.

TTZ (Technologie - Transfer - Zentrum)

The Technologie-Transfer-Zentrum (TTZ), situated in Bremerhaven (north of Germany), was founded in 1987 and operates in the field of technology transfer through five business-orientated institutes: Environmental Institute (UMWELT), Bremerhaven Institute of Food Technology and Bio-process Engineering (BILB), Institute of Energy and Process Engineering (IEV), Bremerhaven Institute Bio-Informatics (BIBIS), Bremerhaven Institute of Organisation and Software (BIOS). Overall, TTZ has 85 employees and an annual turnover of 5 million Euro.

TTZ provides its customers with consultancy services and training to the implementation of complete research projects including both the management and research side. TTZ has successfully co-operated with SMEs at regional, national and EU level in more than 2,500 R&D projects over the last 16 years. In particular, TTZ has a wide experience on the treatment and valorisation of residues generated by food industries in general and by olive mills in particular, having been involved in several European projects on these fields.

Federal Research Centre for Nutrition and Food, Institute for Lipid Research in Muenster (BFEL)

The Federal Research Centre for Nutrition and Food (Bundesforschungsanstalt für Ernährung und Lebensmittel, BFEL) advises the Federal Ministry of Consumer Protection, Nutrition and Agriculture in administration and (national and EU) legislation concerns. Its research activities cover all kind of questions related to nutrition and food. The biological, chemical and physical properties of raw materials, their constituents and final products are studied for food and non-food use. The Research Centre has six sites located in Karlsruhe, Kiel, Kulmbach, Detmold, Hamburg and Muenster.
The Institute for Lipid Research in Muenster has 23 employees, 7 are scientists. The acting head of the institute is Dr. Nikolaus Weber. In the work carried out in the Institute for Lipid Research emphasis is given to problems resulting from production, processing and modification of fats and oils and their respective raw materials. In this context, the development of new physical-chemical methods of analysis is of particular importance, especially to implement the framework of laws and regulations set by the Federal Government and the European Union. This includes the development of criteria that assess applicability and precision of analytical methods and their use for the investigation of fats and minor components, as well as the development of new methods for the determination of other components of oilseeds and new types of seeds, including renewable resources. Research also focused on the recovery of constituents of renewable raw materials, their chemical and technical utilization, and the biotechnolical production of lipids using enzyme catalysis.
